North Snohomish County LPA - Limited English Proficient (LEP) Family Success Story
August 2007 — Binti, Salat and their 3 children arrived in the United States as refugees in 2004. They were part of the Somali, Bantu population who came to the US from refugee camps in Africa. Salat and Binti were illiterate in their own language, never having had the opportunity to attend school in their own country, so you can imagine the challenge of learning the English language in addition to the culture shock of moving from rural life in Africa to urban life in America. 
New Career at State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
Spring 2007 — Nanette Angel has had many careers. In her last one she was a cosmetologist in Bellingham. She worked in a salon where she helped men and women suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment or other health conditions. She loved fitting people with hairpieces that looked so natural other people couldn’t tell they weren’t real. But she had to give it up after having foot surgery. Her doctor told her the long hours of standing would be too much for her.
